![]() "All our memories were in the apartment," he said. He also lost two cars damaged by fire and debris. Inside the condo unit were photographs of them and their children. Months earlier, Glick's wife of 50 years died. Flames shot through windows as they descended. Together they made their way to a fire escape, Glick using a cane. A neighbor pounded on his door to alert him to the fire. Retiree Joel Glick had fallen asleep after returning home from a shopping trip. "It was a good 24 hours before we accounted for everybody, but thank God they all got out," Martinkovic said. Then began the process of evacuating and accounting for over 100 people. One of those guards discovered the fire that eventually consumed most of Grandview's structures. Martinkovic was one of the officials who suggested Grandview use its security guards for around-the-clock fire patrols as it worked to fix the problems. The agreement ended a standoff in which Fallsburg town officials threatened to condemn the property. One month before the fire Grandview's managers agreed to correct fire-safety and building-code violations, including non-working sprinklers and alarms. Public Safety Commissioner Dick Martinkovic estimates that as many as 65 fire companies and over 200 firefighters took part in extinguishing the fire and responding to still-smoking ruins for days afterward. "It's just laying there," current board President John O'Neil said of the ruins. Without the payout, Grandview's board will not be able to complete what may be a multimillion-dollar cleanup, adding Grandview to the county's list of blighted resort hotels. Without the money, Grandview owners will see their investments wasted. A nearly two-year-old lawsuit filed by the property's insurers has jeopardized a $30 million insurance payout that, after expenses, would be split among Grandview's unit owners. Two years after the fire, they and the management board for the condemned 396-unit property find themselves in limbo. "It's such a reminder of the predicament we're in." Locurto is part of a group united by losses ever since a pleasant spring day ended with Grandview residents watching the Loch Sheldrake complex consumed by one of the largest fires in Sullivan County history. "It's so painful to look at," Locurto said. Beyond the signs banning entry and warning of asbestos, in one of the buildings left standing, he can see the condo entombing all his possessions. But behind locked fencing he sees the remnants of the April 14, 2012, fire that destroyed the former Brown's Hotel. He could think of former neighbors or the amenities that included indoor and outdoor pools and a theater. He could remember walking the property's woods with his dog or watching sunlight shimmering on the surface of Hilldale Pond from his unit's balcony. Steve Locurto chooses each time he drives along Route 52 past the ruins of Grandview Palace Condominiums.
